Construction Workers, Auto Drivers, Share Auto Drivers, Lab Technicians and Bank Employees from AITUC and AIBEA assembled in Thiruvanmiyur on 1st May to commemorate May Day. As Chennai workers celebrated the 128th May Day, the challenges before the workers were recalled: the right for a fair minimum wage of atleast Rs 10000 per month, control of price rise, social security, protection of labour rights, immediate stop to privatization of public sector. While the Government has claimed that the employment opportunities have increased from 6.46 crore to 10 crores, the facts belie the statement. The increased contractualization and bribery in employment opportunities, insecurity in protection of labour rights were some of the issues, the workers have vowed to fight in the commemoration of the day when their brethrens fought to win them the right to 8 hour working day.
The May Day celebration started with unveiling of construction workers board at the Thiruvanmiyur Branch. The local branch has been organizing local construction workers, registering them in Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board and availing them benefits under the board. The board was unveiled by Comrade Shanmugavelu, AITUC Chennai District General Secretary and the flag was hoisted by Comrade Ravi, National General Secretary of AITUC Construction Workers Union and was accompanied by General sloganeering.
Around 1000 workers then assembled near Thiruvanmiyur Bus Stand and took a rally to Jayanthi Theater and participated in a public meeting that
was addressed by CPI Comrade Nalla Kannu (CPI), Comrade Ravi (AITUC), Comrade Venkatachalam (AIBEA) and other union representatives.
