The workers striking at Meenakshi Medical College and Research Institute, Kanchipuram withdrew their strike and returned back to work on August 14th following conclusion of negotiations between the union representatives and the management. CITU Kanchipuram district secretary Muthukumar who has been leading this strike says, “The Management has agreed for a salary increase of Rs 1000-Rs 3500. The four workers who had been dismissed during the strike will be taken back. Above all, the management has signed a wage agreement with the union for the first time which is a success for workers”.  According to one of the senior nurses, “The last salary statement we received after the strike had only Rs 700 increment for the experienced nurses. This is not sufficient. The last 2 month salaries have also not been settled. We are waiting for the agreement to be signed and the increments properly settled for us. The other issues such as leave, bonus and transport facilities still have to be negotiated.”. The wage agreement is yet to be signed between the management and the union.
