Marxism or scientific socialism has become the revolutionary movement of the working class.”
-Fidel Castro, televised speech in December 1961.
Fidel Castro, the Cuban Revolutionary who , ever since he led his rebel army to victory over the dictatorial regime of Fulgencio Batista consistently challenged and fought U.S. Imperialism for over half a century , who survived 10 U.S. presidents as well as fall of USSR passed away at the age of 90.
At the age of 32, Fidel Castro became the youngest leader in Latin America in 1959. He soon implemented agrarian reforms and expropriated all the foreign holdings including the foreign oil company holdings. Cuba, from being a puppet regime of U.S. imperialism was now openly challenging it. This led to the bay of pigs invasion in 1961 where 100s of U.S. backed armed militia tried to defeat the Castro government. The invasion ended in a disastrous defeat for the U.S. Castro had survived a number of assassination attempts on his life, all instigated by the CIA.
USA also enforced a severe embargo since 1962, aimed at crippling Cuban economy and defeating the socialist regime. Since 1992 the UNGA has unanimously passed resolutions against to s embargo every year. Even though Cuba depended heavily on the Soviet regime in the years to come, it survived the fall of USSR in 1991. In 2005, relations with Venezuela gave a new lease of life to Cuban economy. Between 1991 and 2005 Cuba, the tiny island not 400 miles away from Miami has survived economic sanctions as well isolation . However Cuban people under the leadership of Castro never gave in.
In the age when idea of nationalism is appropriated by fascist forces like RSS in India who are themselves slaves of imperialist global capital, Cuban Nationalism with its strident anti-imperialist spirit of the masses is a true legacy of Castro. A true homage to this tall revolutionary would be our steadfast struggle with the working class for the dissolution of the global imperialist capitalist regime and ushering a just and equal world order.
