Sanmina workers strike in the factory

  • Demand wage increases, recognition of the union and end to unfair labour practices
  • Workers evicted from factory after judicial intervention
  • Harassment of police against striking workers continues

About 280 Sanmina workers, including 30 workers who are at ‘compulsory rest’ and facing various suspensions, have been on strike since 11PM, Nov 21st. The workers demand a wage increase, union recognition through secret ballot, revocation of suspension and compulsory rest. They have also demanded that the company pay the 21 day wage, which was withheld for a 4 day strike. The strike has followed endless tripartite conciliation meetings between workers, management and the Labour Department, with no progress in resolution of the long pending demands.

Co Workers fight to protect their pregnant colleague at Renault Nissan

On 16th November, workers from Renault Nissan plant in Oragadum, Chennai, went on a sit-in protest at the factory gate. They had come out in support of the fellow women worker, who was being forced to do arduous work inspite of being at an advanced stage of pregnancy. The workers are hesitant to discuss the issue with TK as the negotiations were ongoing. However, some of our sources revealed that the women has been moved to a documentation task and will not be exposed to heavy work for the remainder of her pregnancy. But no action has been taken on the managers and human resource personnel who had willfully ignored her appeals to be transferred. This was the not the first occasion when such an event has gone ‘unreported’. Even earlier a case of verbal abuse by a shop floor supervisor and manager had been settled without any action against the perpetrators. The Union at Renault Nissan has not been actively pursuing these issues as its executive leadership is caught in the midst of a leadership challenge from the workers. With little to no oversight from the state regulators such as Factories Inspectorate (now known as Department of Industrial Safety and Health) and Labour department, the only safeguard for workers are their colleagues.

Workers as youth and youth as workers – RYA Convention in Kanchipuram

Students and youths of today are tomorrow’s workers. Yet, when it comes to interactive engagement between student and youth movements and workers movements, left parties have tended to compartmentalize these groups, articulating their particular concers without linking issues and struggles in a way that prepares the youth as they become part of the working class. The increasing precarious nature of employment has presented an opportunity to link these groups. An attempt by Revolutionary Youth Association is paying dividends in bringing these groups together to fight for their common interests.

RYA Convention at SriperumbudurRYA Kancheepuram held the second annual convention in Sriperumbudur on Sunday (12 Nov 2017) that was attended by more than 200 youth. A majority of the attendees were trainees in factories, and were younger than 25. The overwhelming demands of the attendees were for secured permanent  and dignified employment with a working week of forty hours and a minimum monthly wage of Rs 21,000. They demanded that trainees and contract workers be regularized within a fixed time (of at most a year).

The conference also included youth who were part of community groups, many of whom were students. They presented a variety of community-related demands like controlling the dengue menace, dealing with pollution of local environment cause by factories, and the scrapping of NEET.

From Visaka Guidelines to Conciliation on sexual harassment –  (In)justice in High Court

The issue of sexual harassment at workplace is taking center stage in oppressive politics all over the world. In India, this has started a vigorous discourse on the absence of justice via established institutional processes for women, be it in academia or even in private spaces – our own homes. As the debate rages on, there seems to be mounting evidence of institutional failure to fight this oppressive power hegemony, especially given the way  Chennai High Court has chosen to deal with an issue of harassment within its own premises.

Comrade Seetha, a law college student and an activist with Revolutionary Youth Association, had formally made a complaint to the Registrar of Chennai High Court on 25th April, after she was propositioned by another lawyer, Ragavan on the same day for sexual favors. In the complaint she had also documented that, she and her comrades had confronted the lawyer later in the day, in which the lawyer not only used abusive words but indulged in physical attacks. This is said to have happened in front of witnesses. The CISF personnel, who are in charge of security, were called and led Raghavan away. Comrade Seetha, along with Comrades Shankar and Bharathi, representatives of Democratic Advocates Association(DAA), had filed a formal complaint against Raghavan to the Registrar, who had assured them of appropriate action.
