Veteran social activist Medha Patkar addresses a demonstration by members of Penn Urimai Iyyakam, Nirman Mazdoor Panchayat Sangh, Kadhalora Makkal Padhugapu Iyyakam and…. Over 200 slum dwellers from Shollinganallur, Perungudi, Kannagi Nagar, Velachery, and other parts of southern Chennai assembled at Chepauk for a day long demonstration against evictions and anti people housing policy of the Government of Tamilnadu. They were demanding that evictions being carried out by the slum board has to stop and the slum dwellers should be provided tenure rights and pattas for their houses at the very site. Leaders pointed out that in the name of beautification of rivers or other development activity, the slum dwellers are being targeted for eviction and resettlement in urban peripheries causing serious disruptions to life. Speaking about surveys being carried out by TNSCB for Rajiv Awaz Yogana, the speakers pointed out that the project was being used to get rid of slum dwellers from the city and it has to resisted. They urged the slum dwellers not to get registered for RAY and to demand insitu improvements under the scheme.
Medha Patkar, rallied the slum dwellers to the struggle for their housing rights. She pointed out to the experiences from Mumbai and maintained that the power of the people could lead to success provided they fought with unity and consistency. She also discussed the caste based violence in Tamilnadu in the recent months as a very condemnable condition
She had visited Marrakkam earlier in the day and interacted with the villagers. She had also addressed a demonstration in Kalpakkam against the Nuclear Power Plant and research center. Later in the day she addressed a press meet detailing her visit and discussing number of issues that were affecting peoples lives in Tamilnadu.
During the meeting, a senior member of Aam Admi Party, declared to the gathering that her party will stand fully with the slum dwellers and common people against victimization in the name of development. She further asserted that her party has resolved that no developmental work will be carried out without the consent of the people of the area.
